The Silk Road was a network of Eurasian trade routes active from the second century BCE until the mid-15th century. Spanning over 6,4 0 0 kilometers, it played a central role in facilitating economic, cultural, political and religious inter actions between the East and West.
Geographically lies at the very heart of both Asia and the Silk Roads, henceforth it has played an important role in all processes of exchange. Goods from China had no choice but to first pass through Kabul on their route Westwards and similarly on their return from the West to China and other regions.
Kabul, Balkh, Herat, Kandahar and Bamyan constituted some of the key Silk Road passages, through which trade, culture, religions, syncretic philosophies and technologies freely flowed to reach every corner of Eurasia.
The Bamiyan Valley, enclosed in the high mountainss of the Hindu Kush in central highlands of Afghanistan, was a vital link in the trade routes that spanned from China to India via ancient Bactria (present-day Afghanistan).
The valley, at an altitude of 2,500 meters, follows the line of the Bamiyan Rivers, and has been inhabited sinces at least the 3rd century BC. The passage of merchants through this natural corridor from the earliest days of the Silk Roads brought languages, beliefs and traditions together here, and contributed to its development as a major religious and cultural center throughout the Middle Ages.
Marco Polo is arguably the most famous Western traveler to have journeyed on the Silk Road. He travelled through Afghanistan along the Silk Road between 1271 and 1295.
